The 2024 Black Diamond Tradathon at Wolfberg Cederberg brought together South Africa’s trad climbing community, from newcomers to veterans, for a successful event filled with new route achievements, inspiring talks, and camaraderie against the stunning backdrop of Wolfberg’s iconic sandstone cliffs.

The 2024 Black Diamond Tradathon, hosted in the iconic Wolfberg Cederberg, brought together South Africa’s trad climbing community for an unforgettable event. With its dramatic red sandstone cliffs, breathtaking views, and variety of routes, Wolfberg proved itself once again to be a world-class venue for trad climbing. The stunning natural setting was an ideal backdrop, offering both challenging climbs and inspiring scenery that fueled the enthusiasm of climbers throughout the day.

Tradathon Welcomes Climbers of All Levels in a Spirit of Mentorship and Community

This year’s Tradathon saw an impressive turnout, with approximately 60 climbing parties taking to the walls. A unique feature of the event was the mix of experience levels, bringing together both newcomers to the trad scene and seasoned veteran climbers. The more experienced climbers offered guidance and encouragement to those new to the discipline, fostering an atmosphere of mentorship and camaraderie that added an inspiring depth to the day’s achievements.

In addition to the climbing, attendees enjoyed engaging talks that ranged from trad climbing techniques to stories of past expeditions and insights into the sport’s growing culture. These discussions added a valuable layer to the event, allowing climbers to connect, share knowledge, and celebrate their shared love for climbing.

Despite concerns earlier in the week, the weather held out until Saturday evening, offering cool but stable conditions throughout the day. Black Diamond, as the primary sponsor, kept the “gees” high throughout the event, with climbers, supporters, and spectators celebrating the sense of unity and adventure that defines trad climbing.

New Routes and a Bold Benchmarks

A highlight of the event was the number of new routes opened, each one a testament to the passion and skill of South Africa’s climbing community. An exciting development was a new grade 24 route opened by well known and loved climber Hilton Davies. This technically demanding route has already garnered interest from climbers eager to take on the challenge.
