Building a Rock Climbing Emergency Kit

See what's on Mountain Mail Order's emergency kit list...

As historical fancy man Benjamin Franklin once said, “an ounce of preparation is worth a pound of cure”. While we climbers love to cut down on unnecessary weight and many of us love the dirtbag way of doing things, heading out on an epic with no emergency supplies is less than smart. Keep your adventures safe and come back to tell the tale with our emergency kit checklist!

Sometimes you need a bit more than your rope and draws…

Of course, the best checklist is one that’s tailored to the specific activities you’ll be doing, along with the terrain, area, timeframe and weather. We’ve included everything that could make or break your trip, from injury care to protection from the elements. If you’re not sure exactly what you’ll need for your next expedition, have a chat with the team at your local gear shop and they’ll get you ready for a safe and successful trip.

We’ve included some of our team’s favourite products for stress-free adventuring. Some of these combine several items on the above list, and others are just great additions to have for comfort and safety:

Black Diamond Stormline Stretch Rain Shell

The BD Stormline is uber durable, flexible and able to withstand a range of extreme weather. It’s also extra adjustable for comfort, has a climbing helmet-compatible hood, and packs away neatly into a pocket that you can clip to your bag or harness.

Lifesystems Heatshield Double Blanket

This emergency blanket – big enough for two people – reflects and retains 90% of radiated body heat. Furthermore, it is highly visible, reflective and printed with emergency survival information that could save your life.

Aqua Salveo Water Disinfectant

Drinking sufficient clean water is essential for your health, especially if you’re facing other safety challenges. Just three drops of this can disinfect one litre of water, plus the water stays clean for extended periods of time in high temperatures.

Coghlans Survival Bag

Made from vibrant 3-mil polyethylene, this product can be used as a ground sheet, emergency shelter, distress signal and waterproof gear bag. We love a good versatile product that can be used for a range of functions in a pinch!

Again, the best emergency kit is one tailored to your needs. So, do some research, check in with your local gear store staff, and get stocked for safe adventures!
