In a positive and productive meeting recently, Tony Lourens engaged with Johan and Yolandi from Guano Caves to address recent issues concerning climbers and access policies. Their stance remains firmly supportive of the climbing community, and the discussions led to practical resolutions aimed at maintaining good relations and ensuring continued access.

Climbers’ Day Pass and Pool Access
Guano Caves offers a full-day pass at R200 (R150 during the off-season). However, a special R50 climbers’ entry fee has been negotiated exclusively for climbing activities. This discounted rate does not include access to swimming pools or other facilities. Climbers wishing to enjoy the pools after a climbing session can pay a nominal additional fee at the restaurant reception.
Important Note: Arm bands for climbers will no longer be issued. It is crucial that climbers respect this discounted pass to avoid jeopardizing this arrangement. Misuse may lead to the enforcement of the full day-pass rate for all climbers.
Access to the Original Guano Caves Kloof

Heritage Considerations:
The original Guano Caves are a protected cultural and heritage site. Entry to the caves themselves is strictly prohibited without a designated cultural/heritage guide. Climbers are welcome to use the surrounding climbing areas but must maintain a respectful distance from the cave and its immediate vicinity.

Road and Parking Access:
The road leading to the kloof entrance is narrow, making it unsuitable for two-way traffic over most of its approximately 1 km length. In-season tourist tractor trips require unobstructed road access. To address this, climbers will need to use an alternate parking area and access route:
- New Parking: A small lot accommodating 3-4 cars will be designated. While this is currently sufficient due to the trad-focused nature of climbing in the area, it may require expansion in the future.
- New Pathway: A previously unused and overgrown path will serve as the approach route. Efforts to clear and assess the path are underway, with further updates and access details to follow.

Rules of Conduct and Community Communication
To ensure smooth operations and mutual respect, a “Rules of Conduct” document will be prepared and distributed at the Montagu Guano Cave Resort reception. Climbers are urged to share this information within their communities, especially those in Cape Town and other climbing hubs, to promote awareness and compliance with the updated policies.
This collaborative effort between the climbing community and Guano Caves highlights the importance of preserving access through responsible and respectful practices. Stay tuned for further updates regarding the new pathway and any additional developments.
