Nothing can compare to the hype of a competition hosted by the UKZN climbing committee, give a few dirt bag climbers a venue to work with and some inspired competitors and you’re good to go! This photograph was taken at the annual Durban Bouldering Competition (DBC)2009. After the standard qualifier round, then finals, the real fun commenced. Of the various activities my favourite was the dyno competition, which would have the entire group of boulderers move onto the lead wall to see how far they could jump up from an assigned hold. With the start hold plus minus four meters up with piled up athletics mats, this was not for the faint hearted! With the finals done and dusted and the afterglow of a day of hard climbing and good company, it was now my time to fly. Climbing up made me very aware of how far away the ground really was but as an ambitious adolescent, fear was not going to stop me. After setting up I sprung forth and almost felt wings sprout from my back. Alas, the hold I was so determined to grab was quite a bit further than I had anticipated. On the way down, my comically big gym pants seemed to catch air like mini parachutes before a dramatic crash into the mats. Eventually an unassuming climber took the show away sling shotting himself across the wall to a grip not one other person had even considered an option! PhotoCred: Dylan Salt
