Wild Country has recently announced a voluntary recall of all Superlight Rock nuts. The company summarises the problem as follows:
“Wild Country has recently learned that when single cable Superlight Rocks are exposed to maritime seaside conditions with high concentrations of salt, and/or humid climate with salty atmosphere for an extended period of time, corrosion inside of the ferrule (the swage covered in plastic that is labelled with the name of the product) can occur. This can significantly reduce the breaking strength of the chocks and may therefore become dangerous for a climber in the event of a fall from height.”
Everyone who has purchased WC Superlight Rocks is therefore asked to stop all use of the nuts and, if you would like, return the product to a local supplier. Please note that this is a voluntary recall, which means that you are not required by law to return the product, although you should cease all use immediately regardless. This recall does not apply to any other Wild Country Rocks and applies to Superlight Rock sets and singles produced before 31 December 2022.
The CityROCK Gear Shops in Johannesburg and Cape Town will be accepting recalled Superlight Rocks, which you can exchange for a cash refund or credit in the Gear Shop and online on Mountain Mail Order. Alternatively, you can opt to receive a replacement product when the new shipment arrives around October/November of this year. Wild Country is offering free replacement up until 31 December 2026.
Please be aware that the corrosion described above is not visible to the user, as it occurs within the sealed label around the wire, so no recalled Superlight Rocks should be used no matter what condition they appear to be in.

It’s always unfortunate when a product doesn’t hold up as intended, but we’re glad that Wild Country has stepped in to make sure that everyone stays safe and sound!
