For one epic day each year, the local bouldering scene lights up as climbers from across the country gather for “Tjoms in Arms” (TIA). Unlike any traditional climbing competition, TIA celebrates the spirit of teamwork, with participants climbing in pairs and embracing the energy of the community that keeps the sport alive.
Hosted annually after the Friends and Allies Fables Boulder League, TIA draws setters and climbers from across South Africa for a full day of thrilling action, with teams of two battling it out across 30 qualifying problems in the morning. But the real magic begins later in the day with a session-style final in the evening.
A Full Day of Climbing, Fun, and Festivities
The day kicks off with four rounds of qualifiers, offering teams plenty of time to get in on the action:
• Round 1: 8:00 AM – 10:00 AM
• Round 2: 10:15 AM – 12:15 PM
• Round 3: 12:30 PM – 2:30 PM
• Round 4: 2:45 PM – 4:45 PM
Once the qualifiers wrap up, the fun doesn’t stop. Attendees can enjoy a talk and quiz session in the afternoon before gearing up for the 7:00 PM finals, where the top teams will go head-to-head, showing off serious strength and technique in a high-energy showdown that promises to be unforgettable.
After the finals, the vibes continue with a prize-giving ceremony followed by a legendary afterparty.

The TIA event is not just for climbers. Whether you’re competing or spectating, the atmosphere is unbeatable. Expect food stalls offering tasty bites throughout the day, from breakfast to dinner. Games, quizzes, and plenty of entertainment will keep the energy high between rounds, and spectators can snag prime people-watching spots to take it all in.
It’s a full day of climbing culture at its finest – packed with friendly competition, good food, and a party that’ll go down in climbing history.
