The weekend of 29 September to 2 October, saw top climbers from around the country gathering together at Kloof High School in Kwa-Zulu Natal to get their crush on in the 2023 South African National Climbing Federation (SANCF) National Championships. This event acts as the qualification event for the IFSC African Qualifier taking place from 7 to 9 December at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria, which will determine the athletes representing South Africa at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
The SANCF and KZN Climbing teams took on the massive task of building outdoor speed, lead and bouldering walls from scratch for the competition, and we think it’s safe to say that the event was a smashing success!
The walls turned out beautifully and a very special atmosphere was created on the school field, with competitors and spectators bringing spectacular psych from start to finish. A diverse team of setters made up of Tiffany Wells, Tiaan Bouwer, Katleho Pobe, Jordan Pillay, Wesley Antonites from South Africa, plus IFSC route setter Dirk Uhlig from Germany, worked tirelessly in the sun and through the night to create unique routes and problems that would put the athletes to the test. In addition to the main event, there were plenty of extra activities for spectators to enjoy, including live music, stalls, games and more. All in all, it was an excellent weekend that bodes very well for the upcoming African Qualifier.
