On April 14th, a group of dedicated volunteers came together for a worthy cause: to clean up Table Mountain. With a shared love for this iconic natural wonder, 46 volunteers ascended to the upper ledges, armed with determination and garbage bags, ready to make a difference.
The event, which marked the first clean-up since 2019, holds historical significance as it was traditionally organised by the Mountain Club of South Africa (MCSA). This year’s initiative saw great community involvement, with volunteers not only from MCSA but also from MSAR, CityROCK, and the broader climbing community.
Their efforts were fruitful as they collectively removed a staggering 168.77 kilograms of waste from the mountain’s upper reaches. This remarkable achievement speaks volumes about the dedication and commitment of these individuals to preserve the natural beauty of Table Mountain for generations to come.
Beyond the numbers, this clean-up symbolizes the power of community action and collaboration. It demonstrates that when people unite for a common purpose, they can accomplish great things. It also serves as a reminder of the importance of environmental stewardship and the role each of us plays in safeguarding our planet.
Organisers Megan Beaumont and Michelle Lopez look to run these clean ups more regularly and sent big thanks to all involved, “Every person made such a difference! Let’s keep Table Mountain clean!”
May this event inspire others to join hands in caring for our environment, one mountain, one beach, one park at a time.
