Thanks to many generous donations from all over the world that have raised even more funds than the initial goal of R63 000, Shakira will be getting the opportunity to travel to South Korea to compete in the IFSC Youth World Champs in Seoul!
We are blown away by the generosity of everyone who contributed towards this incredible initiative, and we eagerly await Shakira’s debut performance on the world stage.
Back in March of this year, athletes from around the country travelled to CityROCK Johannesburg to compete for a spot on the team heading through to the 2023 IFSC Youth World Championships (YWC) in Seoul, South Korea this August. Among these competitors was Shakira Fredericks, who gave a stellar performance that saw her coming in 4th place in Bouldering and qualifying to boulder in the YWC! And now she needs the community’s help to get to South Korea for her first international competition…
Shakira was introduced to rock climbing through Dream Higher, an outreach organisation that works to uplift and empower vulnerable youth in Cape Town through regular indoor and outdoor climbing, and has been regularly training with them for a number of years, becoming one of their most dedicated and passionate participants. She has also been a part of Western Cape Climbing‘s High Performance team since 2022, which has offered her the opportunity to enjoy some more competition-focused training.
Travelling to and competing in an international competition is of course very expensive, and Shakira unfortunately does not have the funds to cover these costs alone… which is where we come in! Dream Higher has set up a fundraiser through GivenGain with the goal of raising R63 000, which will cover Shakira’s travelling, accommodation and competition registration expenses for 17 to 29 August.
The climbing community has already come through with fantastic support, with local and international climbers raising over R30 000 in the first week.
