Ivan van der Tang on Life in Orange (8B)

Ivan tackles Life in Orange, a demanding line in Waterval Boven’s Superbowl Sector featuring a techy vertical start and a low-percentage crux under a roof.

Life in Orange (32 or 8B) is a bold and technical sport climbing route at the Superbowl in Waterval Boven — one of South Africa’s most iconic climbing areas. Just three hours from Ivan’s home, the line stood out enough to draw him in for a dedicated project.

In October 2024, Ivan put up draws on Life in Orange to begin working the route. The route doesn’t seamlessly follow Boven’s natural features, it begins with a vert section, which is techy and powerful, leading into a throw under a roof, which turned out to be a low percentage move for Ivan. Once he stuck that move it was just a question of keeping it together to clip the chains.

Whether you’re a climber planning a trip to Waterval Boven or just here to see the send of this iconic line, this video captures the essence of dedication, difficulty, and the pursuit of that perfect redpoint.

Nice one, Ivan! That was an incredible send, keep smashing those routes!
