Climbing, Community, and Celebration for Womxn in Rocklands

Rocklands, South Africa – September 5–7, 2025
A bold and inclusive new festival is carving out space for womxn and underrepresented climbers in South Africa’s climbing community. WHAM FEST – short for Within Her Are Mountains – is set to take place from 5 to 7 September 2025 at the breathtaking Rocklands Basecamp in the Cederberg mountains.
Inspired by the Women’s Bouldering Festivals in Fontainebleau (France) and Mamer (Luxembourg), WHAM FEST aims to bring that same energy closer to home, creating what organisers call an “intentional space where womxn feel supported, seen, and celebrated.”
A Festival with Purpose
More than just a climbing event, WHAM FEST is guided by three core values:
- Empowerment – Encouraging womxn to take up space in climbing and beyond.
- Environmental Stewardship – Promoting conservation and sustainable outdoor practices.
- Community Building – Fostering an inclusive, intersectional space where all are welcome.
What’s On
The weekend promises a jam-packed lineup of womxn-led workshops spanning fitness, art, wellness, and culture—all included in the ticket price. Attendees are free to join as many sessions as they wish. Highlights include:
- Bouldering Basics
- Yoga for Climbing
- Trail Running
- Contact Improvisation
- Indigenous Tea Foraging & Ceremony
- Sound Journey & Guided Meditations
- Lino Cuts & Printmaking
- Night Climbing
- Dance Party
- River Adventure

Staying at Rocklands Basecamp
Accommodation options range from camping and glamping to caravans and a cosy cottage. Shared bookings (ideal for two) are available for the glamping tents, caravans, and cottage, but must be paid for as a single booking. Single occupancy options are available for solo travellers.
Guests should note: those booking canvas tents will need to bring their own bedding and mattress. Fortunately, Rocklands Basecamp is well-equipped with hot showers, a wood-burning communal kitchen, and full cooking facilities.

Food & Local Flavour
While attendees are encouraged to bring their own food, delicious vegetarian dinners will be available Friday and Saturday night, prepared by local women from the Cederberg valley. The meal includes a hearty veggie potjie and traditional roosterkoeks—an optional extra that can be added during booking.
Giving Back
True to its values of empowerment and sustainability, a portion of ticket sales will go to the Rocklands Association for Development (RAD), a nonprofit founded by locals, climbers, and conservationists. RAD focuses on uplifting the Rocklands climbing community through social and environmental initiatives. Learn more at rocklands.org.za.

A Festival for Everyone
The shift to early September was made to make WHAM FEST more affordable and accessible. Organisers are committed to creating an inclusive space where adventure and belonging are available to all.
“We know starting a new sport—or joining a new community—can be intimidating,” say the organisers. “That’s why we’re here: to make it easier, break down barriers, and foster growth.”
Tickets are now available. For more details, updates, and to book your spot, visit the official event page.
