Hi all,
I have been suffering for quite some time from inflammation mostly in my middle/index fingers on the DIP joint, sometimes the PIP as well. It is not injury related but seems to flare up after even minor climbing. I have been to the hand OT a few times who does not believe it to be arthritis (im in my 40's), the doctor thinks its arthritis.
Essentially im asking if any of you folk have good referrals to a medical practitioner that is not going to take one look and say "it's arthritis and here take these meds for the rest of your life". I detest the modern approach of taking meds to fix everything without a thorough exam. It was suggested I see a Rheumatologist, but the reviews of those close to me say the same thing, they are just subscribed life long meds which have various side effects.
I am in the JHB, Randburg area.
Thanks folk!
Hey, have you come alright with the DIP? I’m having the exact symptoms as you and Jenni the hand therapist at Jhb Cityrock helped me managed my conditions and I’m happy climbing again although I still need to stay away from tiny crimps for few more month.
Thanks for the reply. I've seen Jenni a number of times but it seems the pain/inflammation isnt related to use/injury but is something else she cant quite diagnose. I have been refered to a Rheumatologist, but the consensus is that most of the time they just subscribe drugs for Arthritis and I want to find someone who is interested in actually fixing the issue and not just "drug dealing". I've had too much of that nonsense.
So looking a little beyond the hand therapy a.k.a OT sphere (although Jenni is great and highly recommended).
Hey. I unfortunately don’t know of anyone that may help you. I had suffered a medial collateral ligament injury of my middle finger and this found the YouTube channel “Hooper’s Beta” super helpful. He talks about different rock climbing specific injuries and rehab and so on. Maybe there is something on there that can help you. And then I would suggest looking for or googling for a “Sports medicine” doctor who specialist and perhaps even more useful if you find someone with an interest in rock climbing injuries. It might take a few phone calls and hours of digging on the internet - but I believe there should be someone who can help you. Hope you come right. All the best 🙂
