New Crag Launched at Hartebeespoort

Explore and celebrate a brand new JHB crag at the Iron Throne Trail Park on 13 & 14 November.

A brand-new crag, King’s Landing, has been opened at Iron Throne Trail Park. The official launch is taking place on 13 to 14 November. This new crag sits under the Hartebeesport Cable Way on the west side. Access is through the Iron Throne Trail Park, who have funded the bolting of this beautiful piece of rock.

The Cable Way Crags original routes are on the upper east of the big top tier face, bolted by Pierre Carter in 2011. These are accessible by walking up from Iron Throne or using the cable way and abseiling in.

This new crag is phase one of many to come as Iron Throne Trail Park looks to clean up paths, add more routes and make existing crags more accessible. The King’s Landing crag is very beginner friendly, with up to 30m of climbing and grades ranging from 9 to 23. The drive is 45 minutes from Johannesburg, and there are lots of restaurants and pubs in close proximity (including the Iron Throne Brewing Co, which also offers parking); all in all, this great new crag is set to become very popular on weekends for a great morning of climbing followed by a tasty beer and burger.

Bookings are required for the opening weekend to stay COVID-compliant and reduce overcrowding at the base of the crag. Entry is granted with a standard park day pass of R75, which can be bought on-site at the Iron Throne Trail Park entrance. Attendees can also pay R100 entry, R25 of which will go towards the bolting development of the next crag.

Please Note: This is not a guided event and climbers are expected to bring their own climbing gear and safety equipment. After this weekend, the crag will be open as part of the Iron Throne Trail Park and accessible at any time during their opening hours.

Development Fundraising Raffle

Support further development of the crags in this area by getting yourself a raffle ticket for R60, and you could win prizes valued at over R13 000 from Suunto, Bushnell, Black Diamond and Mountain Mail Order. The draw takes place on Monday 15 November and all money raised will go towards the next phases of development.
